Answer

To answer this question there are a number of cases of interest. To begin with, you should clearly know for what type of use you need a camera.

Is it mainly for vacation photos, quick and easy, make snapshots on family celebrations and parties? Do not fool yourself and buy a compact camera. Personally I like the Canon IXUS series, but there are many possibilities.

The numbers of megapixels are getting higher and higher, this is only important if you want the photo’s to be printed. The more pixels the bigger the picture you can print and you will have more opportunities for digital zoom. Image stabilization is handy but not beatific, and makes the camera more expensive.

Would you like more than just snap shots, than a Digital SLR Camera (DSLR) is the right choice. You will have to manage loose lenses though (expensive and sometime heavy). The advantage is that the quality of your photos (technical) will improve. You have to realise that if you use a cheap lens, the benefits of a DSLR in comparison to a good compact camera are reduced. The lens is therefore more important than the camera body. A good lens is an investment, it will give you satisfaction and will last longer than the camera body because that will age faster than you want.
